Su debut cinematográfico llegó con Foxy Lady de 1971, una comedia que sirvió como el debut cinematográfico de Eugene Levy y Andrea Martin. Avance rápido unos años y Reitman dirigió el irreverente Meatballs, a menudo considerado por muchos como el responsable del lanzamiento de las carreras tanto de Reitman como del comediante Bill Murray.

Meatballs también sería la primera de muchas colaboraciones entre él y Murray. En total, los dos trabajaron juntos en cuatro proyectos: Meatballs, Stripes y los dos primeros Ghostbusters.

Reitman se retiró en gran medida de la dirección en 2014 después de dirigir Draft Day, protagonizada por Kevin Costner. Después de eso, se centró principalmente en la producción de proyectos como Baywatch, Father Figures, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting y Ghostbuster: Afterlife.
