Richard Donner, el mítico director de cine responsable de alguna de las películas más conocidas de los 80s, como Superman, Los Goonies o Arma Letal y sus tres secuelas, ha muerto. Tenía 91 años.
Además de dirigir películas, también fue productor de largometrajes, como la primera película de X-Men o Free Willy. Además, estuvo involucrado en series de TV, especialmente en la década de 1960 y 1970. Donner también se involucró en el mundo de los cómics.
Tras la dirección de La Profecía, Richard Donner dirigió la película de Superman estrenada en 1978. Tanto él, como Christopher Reeve, que interpretó al superhéroe, se convirtieron en una sensación internacional. Se calcula que obtuvo más de 134 millones de dólares de la época en la taquilla estadounidense (no hay datos de la recaudación internacional). Eso equivale a 553.250.000 dólares de hoy, ajustando la inflación.
Donner se dedicó a la dirección de Superman II, pero tras peleas con los productores ejecutivos Alexander Salkind y Ilya Salkind y el productor Pierre Spengler, fue despedido y reemplazado por Richard Lester, aún cuando había grabado la mayoría de las escenas.
Finalmente la edición del director original fue lanzada en el DVD llamado Superman II, la versión de Richard Donner. El proyecto salió adelante después de que Bryan Singer fue capaz de recuperar gran parte de las escenas grabadas con Marlon Brando interpretando a Jor-El para ser adaptadas digitalmente en Superman: El regreso.
Tras su fase de superhéroes, Donner fue muy exitoso con Los Goonies y la franquicia de Arma Letal. También, en 1988 dirigió Scrooged, una adaptación moderna en tono comedia de Cuento de Navidad con Bill Murray. En 1997 tuvo otro éxito comercial, Conspiración, o El Complot en hispanoamérica con Mel Gibson y Julia Roberts en los papeles principales.
